Get to know the owner of Detroit K-9 Pet Supplies

DETROITQ: Fadi Qaqish, how did you start?

  • A: Detroit K-9 was established in December 2003. Our first location was on Livernois and Lodge Freeway. I owned the gas station across from this building. It used to be open a month or two a year and sell kennels, straw and rock salt in the winter, but I noticed the store was never consistent. Once closed I decided it was my turn to try this place.

  • Initially, we wanted to open a “You Buy, We Fry” fish market, which is very popular in the city of Detroit. But once I started remodeling the building, I constantly had people come up to me asking if we had any dog food for sale. Come find out, this place was one of the biggest dog food stores in Detroit for about 20-30 years.

  • I decided to try something. I went to a warehouse and bought a bunch of dog food, dropped it off at the building and went back to work at the gas station that day. At the end of the day, I returned to the building and found that we had sold almost everything we had there. I immediately knew we had to change direction and that’s when Detroit K-9 was created.
